soda firing

i finally got the chance to fire some work that'd been sitting around from the last couple of years. it was great to be back in the studio again and firing kilns!

here i am loading the kiln in the FREEZING cold...we packed up a bunch of work in our little kiln
the 30 hour firing lead to some beautiful results. it's kind of funny that something this delicate and feminine came out of the soda firing where everything else is pretty earthy with a totally different feel.
my little shino bowls
three pieces that got fused together, one from each of us... we were thinking of leaving it together as either a fountain sculpture or a massive serving vessel, but in the end we took a rubber mallet to it and got them apart.
and it was mostly just really nice to be back at bennington where people make candy heart sculptures for hours on end or you could look out the window and see things like this

celebrate spring!

last weekend i went up to vermont to visit some friends and make some art.

at pompanuck for the easter egg hunt/spring party people drew a beautiful mandala outside over the course of the celebration

and back at the house we dyed eggs with amy's homemade egg dyes. i think i had at least as much fun as carly.

Nashville

I was a little nervous heading south into the bible belt, but figured a few days couldn't hurt. I got of the cab at the address where I was supposed to be staying only to find myself left in front of a church with nothing else around. Yes, apparently in the South even hotels are connected to churches. I think it might have once been a seminary or something. Anyway, creepy and abandoned as it was at night, the ten stone buildings surrounded by gardens were beautiful during the day.

But one good thing about the South--Spring comes earlier!

And despite my preconceived notions, I liked Nashville a lot from the University life I saw there. Good thing!

A Little Peace in Baltimore

A 24 hour trip to Baltimore was enough to let me know I didn't want to spend the next three years there. But I stayed in the cutest little B&B in the middle of the city. It was a charming old Victorian townhouse with purple everywhere and a clawfoot tub. At least getting to stay there made it worth my time in Baltimore.

Mallorca Sculptures

one of my favorite things about the city of palma de mallorca is the amount of public art. walking around the old part of the city you can see calder, chillida, and miro sculptures. there are also sculptures at the beach, and in other parts. and if that's not enough, there's a contemporary art museum with no entrance fee.
